hit counter singing on a spinning chair

So Neon Indian is one of my favorite artists. Alan Palomo [vocalist/everything else really] is a genius and I love him, but he isn’t for everyone, especially if you hate synth.

It’s a little too easy to mistake NI’s songs for something that would play in those brand name stores with too much cologne and music blasted all the way up, which is a shame because I promise you that they are so much more.

The lyrics (in my opinion) are brilliantly witty. They tend to lean more on the repetitive/pop style, which isn’t usually what I enjoy, but Palomo pulls them off with a certain grace.

Unfortunately, I’m not nearly well acquainted enough with synth music to judge his skill, but I’m sure he’s fairly proficient. There’s also a really great video on the internet of his dad playing guitar. I’ll probably post it later. I guess talent runs in the blood?

I’m not quite sure why I posted this song in particular… Maybe because I’ve had a ridiculous amount of sleep paralysis attacks in the past few months? But I really like Polish Girl, Halogen (I Could Be A Shadow) and Hex Girlfriend.

Boyfriend (Justin Bieber Cover) — Marina & The Diamonds

I never hated Justin Bieber’s version, but this version is way better.

The Program

So I discovered this band through tumblr (I follow one of the vocalists, Julian, www.fauxford.tumblr.com) and they’re totes adorbs.

Writing a review for them for my final project in Journalism 1, which I may post later. I’m really trying to get the word out because I think they have serious potential. I’m also pretty sure all of the band members are rising high schoolers. So check them out if you have the time.

I think it’s fitting that my first post is about “that hipster song with the whistling.” Peter, Bjorn & John is actually one of my favorite bands.

They revived indie/folk/rock/pop (I don’t care if they don’t consider themselves revivalist because I do) but took it to another level.
I really love the lyrics and the two-perspective thing going on. There’s something about their music that’s almost satirical without being sardonic.

This band isn’t for everyone, but if you liked this I really recommend you check out their other songs like Amsterdam and Second Chance, which are slightly more rock/alternative and have great beats. Amsterdam has a very similar vibe to this song, and it’s one of my favorites. If you’re looking for something more folk, Dig A Little Deeper is a nice feel-good song.
